Ohio State football recruiting can be a wild ride full of twists and turns as recruits from all over the country maneuver their way to signing day. Lettermen Row is here to help navigate the tumultuous roads by getting to the heart of the matter with the young football players and Ohio State coaches and staff members themselves. Today we’re joined by Atlanta 2022 tailback Damari Alston, who has become a top target of Ohio State in the last few months.

Some of the comparisons are easy to make for Damari Alston. Some that are used don’t fit at all.

Ohio State was very fond of Georgia running back Jahmyr Gibbs and offered him late in the Class of 2020. But ultimately, when scholarship numbers got tight, it opted against having him on campus for an official visit. Gibbs stayed true to his commitment to Georgia Tech and signed with the Yellow Jackets, and now as a true freshman he’s making major waves across the ACC early in his career.

Maybe it’s how similar Alston is to Gibbs that has helped the 4-star running back from Atlanta’s Woodward Academy capture the attention of the Buckeyes coaching staff. Whatever it is about the 5-foot-11, 205-pound tailback, there’s a serious connection developing between him and Ohio State, especially with running backs coach Tony Alford, linebackers coach Al Washington and coach Ryan Day. It’s a relationship that Alston, who is the country’s No. 27-ranked tailback in the Class of 2022, believes is better than any other he has to this point in his recruitment — and it’s driving his interest in the Buckeyes program.

There’s also been a concerted push by the Ohio State commitments to bring Alston into the fold, a telltale sign that a young prospect is worth paying close attention to. TreVeyon Henderson, Evan Pryor, Jordan Hancock, C.J. Hicks, Bennett Christian and others have been in Alston’s ear, sharing their experiences on the recruiting trail and their opinions on why Ohio State was the right fit for them and why it would be the right fit for Damari Alston too.

How much impact has that had on his recruitment to this point? Does he feel slighted that the home state Georgia Bulldogs haven’t offered yet? What does Damari Alston think of the comparison to Jahymr Gibbs? Lettermen Row has the answer to things and more in the latest edition of Birminology.
