COLUMBUS — Ohio State has lost a commitment in the class of 2022 for the first time: linebacker Dasan McCullough has decommitted from the Buckeyes. He’s now committed to Indiana.

The four-star linebacker, whose father recently took a job as the running backs coach with the Hoosiers, made the announcement on his social media platforms on Sunday.

“First off, I want to thank Ohio State for the amazing opportunity they gave me,” McCullough said in a tweet. “Being a kid from Ohio, it was a true blessing. Special thank you to Coach Washington for believing in my abilities as a player. With that being said, I have de-committed from Ohio State University.

“Indiana. I’m staying home. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity I refuse to pass up. The chance to play under the man I looked up to my whole life is truly amazing, along with the opportunity to play with my best friends, Deah, who has the chance to be special and I get the opportunity to watch and play with. And my oldest brother Deland, simply the reason I wear 1 on my jersey and continue to play the game. Indiana University.. I’m here.”

McCullough was one of three linebackers locked up in the Class of 2022 for Ohio State and had been a vocal part of building the Buckeyes commitment group. His commitment never seemed in doubt and he was actively trying to recruit other top stars, like Indiana’s Caden Curry and Iowa safety Xavier Nwankpa, to join him in Columbus.

However, when his father took a job as the associate head coach at Indiana, rumors began to swirl. McCullough said all the right things but like everything else, that situation also evolved.

Daeh McCullough, a 2023 4-star prospect, and Deland McCullough II, a Miami (Ohio) transfer, both committed to Indiana in the last week. Dasan is now following them there. Playing in Bloomington alongside his brothers was a reason for the decommitment, sources familiar with the situation told Lettermen Row.

The four-star linebacker’s decision drops the Buckeyes to the No. 3-rated class in the 2022 composite rankings. The Buckeyes are now perched behind LSU and Georgia. The Buckeyes now have 10 commitments, four defensive players and six on the offensive side of the ball. McCullough was expected to make an official visit to Ohio State on June 4 with each of the Buckeyes verbals, but that now appears unlikely.

As mentioned, Dasan McCullough is the first Ohio State pledge to decommit during the 2022 recruiting cycle. And with visits returning in early June, the recruiting cycle is only just getting started. There’s potential for a truly wild ride in the months ahead.

The Buckeyes still have commitments from C.J. Hicks and Gabe Powers, two in-state products that seem to be all but signed on the dotted line for Ryan Day and the Buckeyes. What Al Washington and Ohio State does at linebacker to replace Dasan McCullough will now become a big question for the Buckeyes moving forward.
