Garrett Wilson wins NFL Rookie of the Week for second time this season

The New York Jets’ 5-3 start has been surprising. Garrett Wilson‘s production? Well, that was expected. The former Buckeyes wide receiver earned NFL Rookie of the Week honors for the second time this season after racking up six catches for 115 yards — the most in his young career —  in a Week 8 loss to the New England Patriots. It was Wilson’s second 100-yard performance of the season.

Wilson is just the second Jets rookie wideout all-time to record at least two 100-yard receiving games. The only other is Al Toon. He had three such outings in 1985. Toon was the 10th overall pick of that draft. Wilson was the 10th overall pick in this year’s draft.

Just about halfway through the NFL regular season, Wilson has 34 receptions for 429 receiving yards and two touchdowns. His reception and receiving yards totals are second among first-year players.

Michael Thomas to miss the rest of the NFL season

We’ll stay in the NFL with another former Buckeyes wide receiver: Michael Thomas. Once a phenom for the New Orleans Saints, Thomas is now having a hard time just staying on the field. Thomas — who missed more than half of 2020 and the entire 2021 season with recurring injuries — is expected to be sidelined the remainder of the 2022 campaign with a toe injury that’s requiring surgery.

Thomas looked like himself in September, reeling in 16 passes for 171 yards and three touchdowns in the Saints’ first three games of the season. But he hasn’t played since.

Thomas was a top fantasy football weapon and a premier player at his position his first four years in the league. In 2019, his last healthy go-around, he broke the single-season receptions record.

‘They haven’t faced us yet’: Northwestern DB AJ Hampton ready to bring on the Buckeyes aerial attack

Ohio State might not top 300 yards through the air Saturday at Ryan Field. If the Buckeyes don’t, it will probably be because of the elements and not Northwestern’s pass defense, which just allowed Iowa — now 120th in the FBS in passing yards per game — to throw for 220 yards last week. Wildcats defensive back AJ Hampton would beg to differ. The junior had this to say:

“Everybody’s praising these guys, everybody wants these guys to do good. But they haven’t faced us yet. They haven’t faced me, they haven’t faced Cam Mitchell. They haven’t faced any of our secondary …I’m not disrespecting them. But, I mean, it starts with us.”

It’s a byproduct of confidence, not disrespect, but, regardless, it’s bulletin board material for the Buckeyes who have the 11th-ranked passing offense (317.8 yards per game) in the country.
