Ohio State football recruiting can be a wild ride full of twists and turns as recruits from all over the country maneuver their way to signing day. Lettermen Row is here to help navigate the tumultuous roads by getting to the heart of the matter with the young football players themselves. Birminology shows who the young men being recruited by Ohio State truly are — by talking to them. Today’s guest is 4-star cornerback Jakailin Johnson who has just announced his decision to commit to Ohio State.

Ohio State has once again struck recruiting gold in St. Louis.

For the fourth straight recruiting cycle, the Buckeyes landed a commitment from the Gateway City with Sunday’s announcement that 4-star cornerback Jakailin Johnson, better known as J.K, has ended his recruitment.

The decision is one that has been a longtime in the making for Johnson, the country’s No. 4-ranked cornerback according to the 247Sports.com composite rankings. He’s long been considered an Ohio State lean, and he decided to commit to on his birthday rather than waiting for a return visit to Columbus. Johnson’s commitment comes amid nationwide recruiting uncertainty thanks to rising concerns about the coronavirus, a pandemic that has put NCAA recruiting on hold for the foreseeable future.

But Johnson has been anything but uncertain when it comes to Ohio State.

His most recent visit with the Buckeyes was for their home game against Michigan State last October. That visit, combined with the tight-knit bonds that he has with fellow St. Louis products Jameson Williams and Mookie Cooper, pushed Ohio State ahead of programs like Clemson, Notre Dame, Oklahoma and others.

Why did Jakailin Johnson commit to the Buckeyes now? What did he and his coach, a former NFL cornerback, think of Kerry Coombs? Does he intend to become an aggressive recruiter for Ohio State? How important were the current St. Louis players on the Buckeyes roster to his choice?

Find out those answers and more in this special commitment edition of Birminology on Lettermen Row.
