COLUMBUS — Ohio State became one step closer Friday to landing a critical prospect for its 2023 class.

Four-star Pickerington Central (Ohio) forward Devin Royal released his newest trimmed list of schools, going from nine to three, and Ohio State remains in play for Royal.

The No. 1 rated prospect in Ohio and No. 23 overall according to On3, Devin Royal also kept Michigan State and Alabama in his final list of schools he’s considering.

Plenty of steam has picked up toward coach Chris Holtmann and the Buckeyes way in their pursuit of the 6-foot-6, 205-pound in-state prospect. His hometown of Pickerington is only 20 miles away from Ohio State and the Buckeyes have been after Royal before his recruitment really took off.

According to On3 National Recruiting Analyst Jamie Shaw, it’s the already established relationship between Royal and Ohio State that gives the Buckeyes the edge.

Intel says the relationship Royal was able to build over time with the Ohio State program played a factor. There was a comfort level with the location and a relationship with the players. Ohio State was able to lay out their plans for Royal and answered any questions he, or those around him, may have had on the visit. In this day and age of recruiting, things can change at a moment’s notice. As of pressing publish on this article, sources tell On3 to watch for a commitment to Ohio State.

Shaw placed an RPM for Royal to Ohio State with a 75-percent confidence level.

Devin Royal has visited Ohio State twice with an official visit on July 3 and an unofficial visit last October.

Ohio State currently has two pledges in its 2023 class with four-star guard George Washington III and four-star center Austin Parks.

If the Buckeyes land Royal, he’d be the undoubted headliner of the 2023 class thus far.
