Scarlet Sunrise: Will Howard named finalist for Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award

COLUMBUS — Ohio State quarterback Will Howard is one of 10 quarterbacks to be named a finalist for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, which is given annually to the top upperclassman college football quarterback.

Howard is joined by Drew Allar of Penn State, Carson Beck of Georgia, Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel, Cade Klubnik of Clemson, Colorado signal-caller Shedeur Sanders, Miami quarterback Cam Ward, Kurtis Rourke from Indiana, Quinn Ewers from Texas and Jaxson Dart from Ole Miss.

Howard has 1,795 passing yards with 17 passing touchdowns and four interceptions. He also has five rushing touchdowns on the year as he continues to grow as a weapon in the run game.

Howard is set to play at Penn State this week against Allar. A Pennsylvania native, Howard has a chance to get into Heisman Trophy consideration with a strong performance. He’s already a finalist for one prestigious award.

Ohio State left tackle Zen Michalski is trending toward not being available for the Buckeyes top-five matchup at Penn State on Saturday (Noon, FOX).

Ohio State coach Ryan Day said as much during his lightning round press conference with media Wednesday evening.The video player is currently playing an ad.

“It’s trending that he’s not going to play,” Day said of Zen Michalski. “We’ll keep evaluating it but I think we have a pretty good plan moving forward.”

When asked who the left tackle would be, Day declined to say, opting to leave that an open question for Saturday.

Likely without Zen Michalski, Ohio State is going to stress test the offensive line and make sure it’s ready for Saturday afternoon in State College. The Buckeyes said as much on Tuesday during Day’s full media session.

Ohio State is one day closer to the top-five matchup at Penn State this upcoming week, and the Buckeyes are growing more hopeful one of their stars could potentially be in line for a return.

Nothing is guaranteed still, to be clear, but Ohio State coach Ryan Day provided a promising and hopeful update on star safety and leader for the defense Lathan Ransom ahead of the game in Happy Valley.

Day gave the most promising update to date about the status of Ransom ahead of Saturday.

“He had a great day of practice today — full practice, ready to go,” Day said.

When asked to clarify if Ransom would be playing, Day responded: “Yes.”

That backs up what Day said about the star safety Tuesday.
