Scarlet Sunrise: Can Ohio State's defensive line maintain its recent level of success?

by:borrismart08/09/19

Good morning, Ohio State fans, and welcome to the Scarlet Sunrise! Football will always be our focus, but every day we’ll cover news, notes and analysis from across Buckeyes sports. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Ohio State football, recruiting, basketball and more.

Questions for Ohio State defensive line

Ohio State’s defensive line suffered some valuable losses, especially with dominant defensive end Nick Bosa heading off to the NFL. The Buckeyes still have a chance to be great, though, given the talent levels of their roster and the legend who happens to be coaching them.

Who all will be in that rotation for the Buckeyes this season? Just how productive can the defensive line be? Which young guys are ready for bigger roles? Be sure to check out what we learned about the defensive line after the Rushmen talked with the media following the workout at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center on Thursday.

Ohio State chasing Jaylen Johnson

The Buckeyes offered Cincinnati Colerain 2021 athlete Jaylen Johnson following a dominant performance at their one-day camp in June. Since that day at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, Johnson has been in weekly contact with the Ohio State coaching staff as the two sides develop what they hope will be a fruitful longterm relationship.

“We’re talking a lot,” Johnson told Lettermen Row. “Like every week. It’s been [linebackers coach] Al Washington and [co-defensive coordinator] Jeff Hafley.”

To this point, Johnson is still trying to keep his recruitment even-keeled. He’s made it clear that despite the weight of the Buckeyes offer, he’s not in any hurry to make a college decision. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound Johnson is Ohio’s tenth-ranked 2021 prospect according to 247Sports.com. He remains unranked in the composite rankings at this time.

Beanie and The Boom

This week on the Beanie and the Boom Podcast, Reid Fragel joined the show to talk about what he’s been doing since he walked away from the NFL. He also broke down the biggest differences between his former head coaches Jim Tressel and Urban Meyer. The guys also talked about Ohio State’s season outlook.

Nick Bosa injures ankle

Nick Bosa’s NFL career is off to an unfortunate start. Bosa sprained his ankle and will miss the remainder of San Francisco’s season. The 49ers are hoping to have him ready in time for the season opener, but general manager John Lynch did not yet know if that would be possible.

“It’s a significant ankle sprain, and there’s that dreaded high-ankle sprain — he doesn’t have a full-blown one — but it has some components of that,” Lynch told KNBR. “As for timing, I think what we’re comfortable saying — and a lot is going to happen here with kind of the follow-up today, they’ve got the scans — it’s safe to say we won’t see him in the preseason and then we’re going to be very prudent.”
