COLUMBUS — Ohio State beat Maryland to get to rivalry week undefeated.

Michigan took care of its business, as well.

Now the table is set for a top-four clash in the Horseshoe on Saturday, and the College Football Playoff committee made that official on Tuesday night with its latest rankings release.

No. 2 Ohio State. No. 3 Michigan. The only program ahead of both of them is No. 1 Georgia. The Buckeyes and Wolverines have so much to play for: the Big Ten East, the upper hand in bragging rights, the College Football Playoff path.

This wasn’t a surprise, as the Buckeyes and Wolverines have held steady in each of the last two rankings releases prior to Tuesday. But now that it’s official, all that’s left to do is play the game on Saturday.

Ohio State is one of just three Big Ten teams to show up in the third rankings. Michigan, as mentioned, remained No. 3. Penn State stayed put, this time sticking at No. 11 for the second consecutive week. No team in the Big Ten West is ranked.

Ohio State’s season-opening opponent, Notre Dame, just keeps moving on up the standings, as well. After losing to the Buckeyes — and then suffering embarrassing losses to Marshall and Stanford, the Fighting Irish have beaten North Carolina, Syracuse and former top-four team Clemson among others. Notre Dame checked in this week at No. 15 after pummeling Boston College.

This released poll comes after the Buckeyes remained in the top three of the AP Top 25 following another win over Maryland on Saturday. And after another notch in the win column, that’s exactly where Ohio State will stay in both the AP Poll and the new College Football Playoff rankings.
