Good morning, Ohio State fans, and welcome to the Scarlet Sunrise. Football will always be our focus, but every day we’ll cover news, notes and analysis from across Buckeyes sports. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Ohio State football, recruiting, basketball and more.

Buckeyes begin new tradition, Jonathon Cooper honored

Ohio State has plenty of traditions in the football program. And the Buckeyes are starting a new tradition beginning this season.

Every year, one Ohio State player will wear the No. 0 jersey, the “Block O” jersey to honor the late Bill Willis, an Ohio State legend. And fifth-year senior Jonathon Cooper will be the first Buckeyes player to wear the jersey when the Buckeyes kick off against Nebraska in less than two weeks. On a graphic on the Buckeyes football Twitter account, the program said that Cooper exemplifies the traits that Willis did: Toughness, accountability and fight.

“This honor stands out from the rest,” Cooper said in a release from the football program. “Being a captain, all the great things that have happened here at Ohio State, this one stands out a lot more to me personally. It doesn’t just represent me, it represents a great man, a great player who played here. I know when I put that jersey on I’m representing him and I have to go out there and be my very best, and I have to do that every single day. This one really means a lot to me.”

The program has plenty of traditions it carries out every game and every year. Ryan Day and the Buckeyes are adding a new one to the fold. And Jonathon Cooper will be the first Ohio State player to wear the “Block O” jersey to honor Bill Willis.

Buckeyes slide up in latest poll

The wait is almost over for Ohio State. The Buckeyes have had to watch other college football teams play football for six weeks, and they’ll only have to sit by and watch for one more week. Ohio State kicks off in less than two weeks, and it still is being left off some ballots until the Big Ten kicks off.

Until then, the Buckeyes are lower than they should be. Ohio State checked in at No. 5 in the latest Amway Coaches Poll on Sunday afternoon, receiving two first-place votes. Clemson retained the top spot in the poll after its top-10 win. The Tigers were followed by Alabama, Georgia, Notre Dame and Ohio State. The Buckeyes are No. 6 once again in the latest Associated Press Poll, and the Buckeyes earned no first-place votes in that poll.

Ohio State certainly doesn’t care where its ranked at any point in the season, especially before it even starts, and the polls don’t truly matter this early in the season anway. But as long as polls keep coming out, the Buckeyes will at least crack the top 10.

Coaches Poll (Oct. 11)

No. 1 – Clemson

No. 2 – Alabama

No. 3 – Georgia

No. 4 – Notre Dame

No. 5 – Ohio State
