COLUMBUS — Ohio State knows that the most important position on the field is the quarterback.

And the Buckeyes know they absolutely have to ace recruiting the position in the 2024 class. They did just fine in 2023 with four-star Pierre (S.D) T.F. Riggs quarterback Lincoln Kienholz, but a look at the roster situation indicates a clear need for head coach Ryan Day and position coach Corey Dennis to find a perennial talent.

Ohio State had five-star Chandler (Ariz.) prospect Dylan Raiola in the 2024 class, but he decommitted in December. The Buckeyes aren’t going from complete scratch, but there is a bit of a rebuild on the board at signal caller.

In the latest episode of the Lettermen Lounge, the Lettermen Row staffers Matt Parker and Spencer Holbrook hashed out the quarterback conundrum and two names that hold a lot of interest right now.

Let’s review.

Back to the start

When the Buckeyes started their pursuit of a 2024 quarterback there were two names highly discussed: Dylan Raiola and Jadyn Davis.

Ohio State and Raiola, at the time, chose each other, leaving Davis as the odd man out. Now given the current state of things, Davis automatically has reentered the conversation. Day and Dennis visited the four-star Charlotte (N.C.) Providence Day School prospect.

While the visit was more or less a formality, it matters that it happened in the first place. Davis was a second choice to Ohio State and that is an awkward position to be told no, and then yes.

Will the country’s No. 2 quarterback in the On3 Consensus rekindle the relationship he once had with the Buckeyes?

Lettermen Row will closely follow that storyline and discussed it in the latest Lettermen Lounge.

Crashing the Tide?

Ohio State has offered plenty of high-level prospects in the last few weeks.

Of the few offers that stood above the rest, the offer to four-star Carlsbad (Calif.) quarterback Julian Sayin certainly was one of them.

Sayin is the country’s No. 4 quarterback per On3 and the On3 Consensus. He is also committed to Alabama.

He has remained steadfast in his two-month commitment to the Crimson Tide, and while he said the Ohio State offer was nice, the only place he will go to is Tuscaloosa.

Relationships are a fragile thing right now in recruiting. Moreso than ever. And if Ohio State is serious about Sayin, it will do all it can to crack that relationship.

What’s next?

Ohio State, and all the other programs around the country, are about to enter the first dead period of the 2023 calendar year.

During that time the Buckeyes staff will plan out visits for spring visits and make sure all the prospects that have offers or they are interested in without an offer make it to Columbus.

In the meantime, catch up on the quarterback conversation in the latest episode of the Lettermen Lounge.
