3 biggest fall camp breakout players

Ryan Day wasn’t taking the bait when asked which young players were impressing him during Ohio State’s fall camp.

“I don’t want to sell anybody short,” Day said. “Because I think there’s a lot of guys working out there and some guys are stepping up. It’s still early.”

But while Day was spreading around the credit for the entire roster and not singling out any young Buckeyes, it’s already quite clear which young guys have a chance to truly jump into the mix and make an impact right away. The list can obviously expand since there’s still plenty of work left in training camp, but for Lettermen Row, there were three clear winners emerging from the group of guys who either just arrived or are looking for their first opportunities to shine for Ohio State. Check out the list and analysis here.

Takeaways from OL interviews

Two seasons ago, Urban Meyer cited that the Ohio State offensive line was dangerously thin, and one injury could be detrimental for the Buckeyes. Times sure have changed. Offensive line coach Greg Studrawa loves the unit he has, and he thinks the Buckeyes are deep at every spot along the line.

“I had a really good feeling we were going to be as deep as we’ve been,” Studrawa said. “That hasn’t disappointed me. We’re right where I thought we’d be. The competition is unbelievable. There’s four tackles that would start anywhere in this league and a lot of places. I have the benefit of having four. The inside guys — Harry Miller’s been unbelievable. Josh Myers is becoming a great player. Working his tail off. His attention to detail is unbelievable. He’s becoming exactly what I thought he’d become.”

Be sure to check out what we learned about the offensive line following training camp at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center on Thursday.

Tracy Sprinkle on Jashon Cornell

Jashon Cornell isn’t looking back in frustration. The fifth-year senior is just chalking the growth process up to his journey at Ohio State and embracing where it’s all finally led him. Cornell has needed patience. He’s needed to accept a backup role. He’s had to learn multiple positions and he’s watched as other decorated recruits have had their moments while seemingly skipping ahead of him in line.

But if all of that winds up paying off with the kind of breakout season that looks well within reach of him this season, Cornell has no complaints now that he’s finally found a home in the three-technique spot for the Buckeyes and might be on the brink of earning a starting job.

What does Jashon Cornell bring to the Ohio State defensive line? How close is he to claiming a first-team position for the Buckeyes? Why is three-technique the right spot for him? Former Ohio State defensive lineman Tracy Sprinkle was back in the Lettermen Row film lab breaking down Cornell and what’s next for him heading into the season in the latest episode of BuckIQ.
