Buckeyes remain on edge of AP Poll entering Big Ten play

COLUMBUS — Ohio State remained the No. 25 team in the AP Poll Monday afternoon after splitting last week’s games against now-No. 15 Duke and St. Francis.
The Buckeyes (6-2) are one of five Big Ten teams in the AP Top 25. The others are No. 4 Purdue, No. 13 Maryland, No. 14 Indiana and No. 17 Illinois.
The poll’s top three — consisting of No. 1 Houston, No. 2 Texas and No. 3 Virginia — didn’t budge. Purdue rose to No. 4. And UConn climbed three spots to No. 5.
Two of the week’s biggest winners were Tennessee, which rose six places to No. 7 with a couple blowout wins, and Maryland, which went from No. 22 to No. 13 with with victories over Louisville and Illinois.
Ohio State kicks off Big Ten play Thursday at home against Rutgers. It’s the Buckeyes’ second straight home game after playing four consecutive games away from The Schottenstein Center — three of those were in the Maui Invitational, and the last one was in Durham at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The Buckeyes are coming off a 96-59 win over St. Francis, during which they pulled away with 52 second-half points. Six different Ohio State players finished in double figures, and freshmen Roddy Gayle Jr. and Felix Okpara reached the 10-point mark for the first time in their young Buckeyes careers.
