Ohio State OC Brian Hartline calls UTV crash a ‘learning opportunity’

Ohio State offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Brian Hartline met with the media Tuesday in the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, along with the rest of the Buckeyes’ assistant coaches.

Hartline addressed reporters for the first time since his side-by-side UTV crash the early morning of April 16, less than 12 hours after the conclusion of the program’s spring game. The rollover accident, from which Hartline and a Lewis Center male — unaffiliated with Ohio State — suffered non-life-threatening injuries, occurred on Hartline’s property in Delaware County. Hartline was the driver of the UTV and, according to the initial report from the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department, had admitted to drinking before the crash. Both men were hospitalized.

Hartline ended up being released from Riverside Methodist Hospital on April 17.

“There’s nothing I can really say,” Hartline said Tuesday, when asked about the accident. “All I would say is that, in hindsight, I probably would have rather went to bed instead of riding in a side-by-side.”

Hartline noted that he feels “good” and joked that “I could play a game right now.”

Hartline, who played at Ohio State before a seven-year NFL career, is in his first season as the Buckeyes’ OC. He’s also in his sixth year with the program’s staff. He was promoted for the second straight offseason after he continued to establish himself as one of the best recruiters in the sport, particularly at the wide receiver position, where he has helped develop three first-round picks the last two years.

Hartline was asked if he had brought up the crash with the team and/or the wide receiver room specifically.

“No,” Hartline answered, “but anything addressed or anything that we do will be kept in-house.”

Hartline, who noted “it always can be worse,” didn’t talk extensively about the accident Tuesday, but he did provide a takeaway from the experience.

“Everything provides a learning opportunity,” he said, “and I would say it was a learning opportunity.”

Lessons learned after hearing from every Buckeyes assistant

Ahead of summer workouts, all 10 Ohio State assistant coaches, plus strength coach Mickey Marotti, met with the media for a jam-packed round of interviews.

Lettermen Row was there to gather the latest Buckeyes intel.

Our crew of Spencer Holbrook, Tim May and Andy Backstrom then discussed what they heard in another Offseason Report video, presented by Byers Auto.

It’s “Tight End Week” at Lettermen Row. Like we did with the quarterbacks last week, we will be breaking down all things Ohio State tight ends this time around.

One good place to start is an overview of how each of the Buckeyes’ scholarship tight ends got to this point of their careers. We summarized their journeys from high school to Columbus: Everything from Cade Stover’s rise to pass-catching prominence to Jelani Thurman’s head-turning spring.

It’s a complete rundown of the Buckeyes’ top-six players at a position that appears to be on the upswing in Ohio State’s explosive aerial attack.
