COLUMBUS — C.J. Stroud may or may not have played his final game in a Buckeyes uniform — that likely depends on if Ohio State backs its way into the College Football Playoff — but even if he doesn’t play another down, he’s already going down as one of the program’s all-time quarterbacks.

Stroud was recognized Wednesday as a Walter Camp Player of the Year finalist. The news came just a few hours after the redshirt sophomore star was named both Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and Big Ten Quarterback of the Year for the second season in a row.

Stroud is also a finalist for both the Davey O’Brien Award and the Maxwell Award, given annually to the top quarterback and most outstanding player, respectively, in college football.

As for the Walter Camp Player of the Year award, here are the five finalists:

Last year, Michigan State running back Kenneth Walker III — now with the Seattle Seahawks — won the award.

Stroud is tied for first nationally with 37 touchdown passes this season, and he’s tops in the nation with a 176.25 passer rating. Although his completion percentage has dipped from 71.9% (2021) to 66.2% (2022), and he threw for 1,000-plus fewer yards than he did last year, Stroud still posted five 300-yard games and rounded out six outings with at least four touchdown passes during the 2022 regular season.

Stroud has helped guide Ohio State to an 11-1 record in his second year as the team’s starter, and, while he and the rest of the Buckeyes once again came up short versus Michigan, he’s still considered a potential top-five 2023 NFL Draft pick.

The Walter Camp Player of the Year award is voted on by all 131 FBS coaches and sports information directors. The winner will be announced on Dec. 8 during ESPN’s “The Home Depot College Football Awards Show.”
