COLUMBUS — Oregon State transfer quarterback Tristan Gebbia became the fifth Ohio State player this spring to lose his black stripe.

Gebbia is in his seventh year of college football after starting his career at Nebraska and then spending his last five years at Oregon State. Along the way, the Calabasas, California, native received a medical redshirt for a serious hamstring injury he suffered late in the 2020 season. Plus, he picked up the COVID-19 year, hence why he had seven years of eligibility rather than the pre-pandemic standard of five years.

Gebbia is currently the Buckeyes’ third-string quarterback behind Kyle McCord and Devin Brown, who are competing for the starting job this spring.

Gebbia wants to be a coach after his playing career is over. Coming to Ohio State is a great opportunity to jumpstart that process, especially during a seventh year where he can act as a pseudo-graduate assistant who is actually on the field in pads and going through practice with the other quarterbacks.

Gebbia actually has more experience than the rest of the Buckeyes’ quarterback room combined. Gebbia appeared in 12 games for Oregon State, making five starts in the process. Those starts were consecutive, and the last one came against then-No. 15 Oregon in 2020, a rivalry matchup in which he guided the Beavers to a 41-38 victory with 263 passing yards and a touchdown before going down with his aforementioned career-altering injury.

Gebbia completed 128-of-200 passes for 1,250 yards, five touchdowns and four interceptions in his Oregon State career. He made three relief appearances last season while Oregon State recorded its first 10-win season since 2006.
