Ohio State football recruiting can be a wild ride. It’s full of twists and turns as recruits from all over the country maneuver their way to signing day. Lettermen Row is here to help navigate the tumultuous roads by getting to the heart of the matter. We’re talking with the young players and sometimes, the Ohio State coaches and staff members themselves. Today we’re talking to 2024 prospect Peyton Woodyard, one of seven sophomores that the Buckeyes have offered across the country.

COLUMBUS — Peyton Woodyard didn’t know what to expect when he flew into Ohio for his first visit with the Buckeyes.

He saw a little bit of everything -— and that was before he landed at the airport.

“As we were getting close to landing I was like: ‘Whoa, this is different than I thought,'” Woodyard told Lettermen Row at the time. “It’s big, there’s lakes, there’s a city, there’s everything.”

Ohio State offered Woodyard on that visit. The time he spent with defensive backs coach Matt Barnes on the practice field paid off. That education led to one his own: exactly what kind of program the Buckeyes have.

“They definitely taught me new things,” Peyton Woodyard said. “Things that I can put in my tool belt. They really wanted us to go out there and compete and be physical. You can tell they’re elite.”

Peyton Woodyard has a chance to be elite, too. His 6-foot-2, 190-pound frame is well-filled out already. His football IQ and foot speed are beyonds his years, too.

That’s why Ohio State, Notre Dame, Alabama, and more than a dozen others have already offered him a scholarship. He’s played just seven high school football games but has already put himself firmly on the radar of college coaches and evaluators all over the country.

What did a busy summer teach him about the recruiting process? How did he connect with Matt Barnes and Kerry Coombs? What do he and his teammates at St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) think about all leaving the West Coast together?

Peyton Woodyard, a potential 5-star prospect in the Class of 2024, joined Birminology to discuss all those things and more.
