Ohio State football recruiting can be a wild ride full of twists and turns as recruits from all over the country maneuver their way to signing day. Lettermen Row is here to help navigate the tumultuous roads by getting to the heart of the matter with the young football players and Ohio State coaches and staff members themselves. Today we’re joined by Ryan Day, the head coach of the Buckeyes.

COLUMBUS — It’s been another wild year for Ryan Day and Ohio State.

The Buckeyes head coach has seen his fair share of chaos since taking over for Urban Meyer three seasons ago but college football is in a much different place than at any time in its history.

Rumors of his own potential job change, a need to make changes to the Ohio State staff, balancing the impact of the transfer portal and Name, Image and Likeness are all added to what was already a crazy mix when it was just coaching football and recruiting players.

The constant upheaval and realignment of the college game is dizzying Ryan Day said Wednesday.

“It’s part of the job,” Day said. “And no one said it’s easy, but that’s what it is. And I think one of the biggest challenges right now is the unknown. For a long time, you knew what the rules were, you knew what to expect, right? Now, you feel like things are changing on a daily basis, and you have to stay out in front of it the best you can.

“I think that’s probably the most unnerving thing right now for all of us.”

Unnerving though it may be, Ohio State still had to sign its latest recruiting class on Wednesday. So far, the Buckeyes have signed 17 new scholarship athletes to their program and they’ll keep looking for more. It’s a group that Ryan Day is happy to call his next wave.

“First off, I’m very excited about this class,” Day said. “The athletic ability, and the potential, these guys have to be really good football players that’s one thing.

“But it’s also the type of people that we have that are coming into this program.”

In a world going crazy, it’s still about the people for Ryan Day and Ohio State.

How does the Buckeyes head coach adapt to the changes from here? How has the transfer portal changed his approach in conversations with recruits? Which players does he think deserved to be talked about more in the recruiting process?

Ryan Day joined Birminology to talk about those things and more in a special Early Signing Period edition of the show.
