Buckeyes welcome top running back target for visit
Donovan Edwards, one of Ohio State’s top running back targets in the Class of 2021, arrived in Columbus on Thursday evening for a very important visit with the Buckeyes.
With Edwards will be dynamic 2022 athlete Dillon Tatum and their coach. That trio will watch Ohio State’s practice and talk to Ohio State coaches Ryan Day, Tony Alford and the rest of the coaching staff and administration. It’s one of the most important visits in the 2021 recruiting class, and it kicks off a huge next few weeks in which the Buckeyes will welcome many of the country’s top prospects at the running back position. It’s especially a key visit for the Buckeyes, who are short on running back for this upcoming season and need to make a big splash in the 2021 class to restock the position.
Donovan Edwards is the first of the top running back targets to visit, and Birm will have plenty of coverage of the fallout from Edwards’ visit as things unfold over the next few weeks. Make sure to check out Dotting The ‘Eyes every day for wall-to-wall coverage and updates.
Justin Fields likely to become larger part of run game
Ohio State’s running game took a hit Monday when Master Teague suffered a spring-ending injury that sources have told Lettermen Row is a torn Achilles. So what are the Buckeyes to do about their depleted backfield? Well, Justin Fields is a capable runner — as well as a fantastic passer. The dual-threat quarterback could become an even larger part of the run game than he was a year ago, when he had 484 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground.
From our very own senior writer Austin Ward:
Make no mistake: Justin Fields is going to be part of that equation for the Buckeyes. Aside from his passing ability, the presence of Dobbins also meant that Fields didn’t have to show off his blazing speed, quick-shift elusiveness and ability to withstand punishment as frequently as a runner. When it comes to balancing the offense, Fields is going to need to do more of that with his feet — perhaps most notably in short-yardage or red-zone situations to keep defenses honest.
There are plenty of other reasons to remain optimistic about the run game as a huge part of the Ohio State offense. Check out the rest of the reasons here.
Ohio State hoops beats Illinois to remain hot
Ohio State was written off by some after a terrible opening month of 2020. But now, the Buckeyes keep winning, and they continue to show they might have what it takes to win big games in the Big Ten Tournament and beyond. That was evident Thursday night when they had to come back on multiple occasions. Ohio State once trailed by 11. It trailed by nine at one point. And it also trailed by seven.
Each time, No. 19 Ohio State overcame the deficit and grabbed a huge 71-63 win over No. 23 Illinois in the Schottenstein Center, defeating a ranked team for the third time in its last four games. Now winners of nine of their last 11, the Buckeyes have found ways to win game after game in new ways every time. In March, it doesn’t matter how they win. This Buckeyes team just keeps winning.
The latest win might be the most impressive considering how Ohio State shot poorly overall and allowed the Illini to control much of the first half. Those things didn’t matter in the end. Lettermen Row was inside the Schottenstein Center to break down another win by the Buckeyes.
