Buckeyes Rookie of the Year dynasty continues

Ohio State has an ongoing dynasty in the NFL.

Former Buckeyes have now captured four of the last five Defensive Rookie of the Year honors. Chase Young is the latest recipient, winning the award running away at the NFL Award ceremony Saturday night. Young joins Marshon Lattimore, Joey Bosa and Nick Bosa as the winners of that award in the last five seasons.

Young had 44 tackles, four forced fumbles, four passes deflected and 7.5 sacks during his rookie season, dominating pro offensive tackles during his first year in the league. The No. 2 pick in last year’s draft to the Washington Football Team picked up where he left off when he finished his Ohio State career as the single-season sack record holder.

Young will certainly have more sacks in the coming years, and he seems to only be getting better. But he was the best rookie from the 2020 NFL draft class, and he was honored as such Saturday, continuing the ongoing Ohio State defensive rookie dynasty.

ICYMI: Jonathon Cooper breaks down Tyreke Smith

Tyreke Smith may well be the next first-round draft pick from the Ohio State defensive line. It just won’t be this year.

Thanks to his undeniable physical gifts, a wealth of knowledge already stored away from three seasons working with Larry Johnson and then a dominant outing in the Sugar Bowl, Smith easily could have elected to move on from the Buckeyes after his junior campaign. But thanks to a string of injuries and bad luck that have kept him from ever putting together a complete season to show what he can really do, there’s actually a decent amount of unfinished business for Smith — giving both him and Ohio State plenty to prove with one more year in the program.

What makes Tyreke Smith such a special pass rusher for Ohio State when he’s healthy? Where can the veteran continue to improve heading into his final season with the program? How does he get off the football so fast for the Buckeyes? Former Ohio State captain and defensive end Jonathon Cooper popped in the highlights and answered those questions and more in the latest episode of BuckIQ.

Is Ohio State basketball legitimate threat in Big Ten?

Ohio State will likely be ranked as a top-5 team in the country when the new AP Poll comes out Monday afternoon. But are the Buckeyes a legitimate threat to make a run in the Big Dance next month? Can they win the Big Ten in the best conference in college basketball? Do the Buckeyes have what it takes to win a championship? Lettermen Row broke down five stats that show the Buckeyes are a contender.

One of them can be found here:

Ohio State is currently third in the Big Ten standings, behind only Illinois — who the Buckeyes have already beaten — and Michigan. The Buckeyes haven’t just been winning games this season; they are beating the best teams on their schedule. With two wins over Rutgers, a win over the Illini and victories on the road at Wisconsin and Iowa, this Ohio State team is taking care of ranked opponents on its schedule. The Buckeyes also have an early-season win over a quality UCLA team that shouldn’t be overlooked. Ohio State will still face three more ranked opponents before the regular season ends, but the record against top-25 teams to date is certainly impressive.
