Buckeyes planning full capacity, tailgating for season opener

Ohio State wasn’t able to pack the Horseshoe last season due to the pandemic.

That’s changing this fall. Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith is confident the athletic department can host Buckeyes fans at 100 percent capacity this fall in Ohio Stadiums, beginning with the massive Sept. 11 showdown against Oregon. And another important game-day tradition will be back, as well: tailgating.

“We’re going all the way live,” Smith told 10TV’s Dom Tiberi on Tuesday evening in an on-camera interview. “We’re tailgating. We don’t see any change in what we had prior to COVID. We’re hopeful that we don’t end up in a situation where we have a huge spike as a result of the delta variant. But right now, we’re all the way live. We’re a full stadium, full tailgating, the whole nine yards.”

The Buckeyes had to play in quiet, hollow stadiums last season, including an empty Horseshoe with no fans. That’ll change this fall. Smith and the athletic department are already preparing for a normal season with more than 100,000 fans.

New Tim May Podcast

The Tim May Podcast is back for another episode, breaking down the top-ranked defensive recruit to ever commit to Ohio State.

Tim welcomes on the high school coach of No. 1 prospect J.T. Tuimoloau, Dominic Daste, to discuss the impact of the 6-foot-5, 277-pound defensive lineman’s impact. The Eastside Catholic (Sammamish, Wash.) product waited out the NCAA’s dead period. Tuimoloau took visits to Washington, USC, Ohio State and Oregon before entering decision mode. He was supposed to visit Alabama, but canceled the trip and ruled the Crimson Tide out as a possible landing spot.

Daste has spent time as an assistant coach with Montana and UNLV, and he had a chance to coach Tuimoloau again this spring. Since Tuimoloau didn’t enroll early, he played a final high school season at Eastside Catholic. The alma mater of current Ohio State tight end Gee Scott Jr., Tuimoloau made the rosters for the All-American Bowl and Polynesian Bowl.

What does J.T. Tuimoloau bring to Ohio State? How can he make an impact this fall? And what kind of player is he like off the field?

Talking Stuff: The Ohio State Recruiting Podcast

Ohio State has dominated the recruiting trail in the opening days of July, providing plenty to talk about on the latest episode of Talking Stuff.

The Buckeyes have landed three commitments in less than a week.

But none of those three were offensive linemen or defensive linemen in the 2022 class. Tegra Tshabola is currently the only offensive lineman in the Ohio State class. The Buckeyes are still in the mix for highly-rated offensive line prospects Earnest Greene, Kam Dewberry, Aamil Wagner, Addison Nichols, Zach Rice and Tyler Booker. And they’re certainly in the mix for plenty of top-rated defensive ends and defensive tackles.

Lettermen Row’s Jeremy Birmingham and Spencer Holbrook are discussing those topics and more in the latest episode of Talking Stuff, the recruiting podcast from Lettermen Row.

Talking Stuff is presented by the fine folks at Byers Auto, the best place to buy a new or used car in Central Ohio.
