Conference alliance won’t impact Buckeyes future opponents

Ohio State has some of the biggest nonconference matchups in college football over the next decade.

Series against Washington, Notre Dame, Alabama, Georgia, Texas and Boston College are already set during the next 10 years.

But the Big Ten, ACC and Pac-12 announced a conference alliance that includes academic and athletic partnerships, which would involve football scheduling.

The three leagues made it clear, however, that the alliance between them won’t get in the way of future football opponents already on the schedule and under contract.

“The scheduling alliance will begin as soon as practical while honoring current contractual obligations,” the three leagues said in a statement about the alliance. “A working group comprised of athletic directors representing the three conferences will oversee the scheduling component of the alliance, including determining the criteria upon which scheduling decisions will be made. All three leagues and their respective institutions understand that scheduling decisions will be an evolutionary process given current scheduling commitments.”

The Buckeyes have marquee nonconference matchups littered through the schedule over the next decade. And the new three-conference alliance won’t interfere with those massive games.

Lettermen Row sits down with Ohio State coach Ryan Day

The Buckeyes are undoubtedly operating at a much higher level than the rest of the Big Ten as they open defense of their crown next week at Minnesota. And they remain one of the only programs in the country that can be penciled in as a College Football Playoff contender on an annual basis.

Those are the expectations Day inherited when he took over for Urban Meyer, though he’s faced some unprecedented challenges already in meeting them and is in the midst of generational changes to the way college football operates.

The leader of the Buckeyes addressed all that and more in an exclusive conversation with Lettermen Row‘s Austin Ward inside his office at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. This is the State of the Program as the Buckeyes wrap up training camp and get ready to start another title chase with Ryan Day leading the way.

New Tim May Podcast

Ohio State is another week closer to kicking off the regular season. The Tim May Podcast is back with another jam-packed episode that certainly isn’t short on storylines.

Tim welcomes former Ohio State linebacker and national-title winner Cie Grant on the show. Tim and Cie break down what they think of the Buckeyes, and of course, they talk about memories made during the run to the 2002 national championship.

Tim also welcomed Lettermen Row senior writer Austin Ward on the show to break down what they see from the Buckeyes with fewer than 10 days until the season-opening game against Minnesota. They chat about the uncertainty at linebacker, who the X-factor could be and why C.J. Stroud won the quarterback job over Jack Miller and Kyle McCord.

May and Ward make sure to chop it up and give plenty of inside looks at the Buckeyes as they wrap up training camp and turn their focus to chasing a national championship yet again this season, a goal they came close to reaching last year.

This episode can serve as a primer for the season, which is right around the corner.
