Buckeyes linebacker commits make Butkus Award watch list
Ohio State has commitments from two of the top five linebacker prospects in the country as part of its top-ranked 2022 recruiting class.
Both C.J. Hicks and Gabe Powers, in-state linebackers, continue to prove why they are so highly-rated. Hicks and Powers were both named to the Butkus Award watch list this week. The Butkus Award, given annually to the top high school, college and pro linebackers, has been handed out at the high school ranks every year since 2008.
The only Ohio State commitment to ever win the award was Raekwon McMillan, who won the award in 2013 before attending Ohio State.
Now the five-star Hicks and the four-star Powers each have a chance to become the second future Buckeyes star to win the Butkus Award. Both were among the 51 prep stars to be named to the watch list for the prestigious award.
Top 2024 quarterback prospect joins Birminology
It’s not often that a young quarterback commands the type of attention that Jadyn Davis did during his visit to Ohio State last month.
The 6-foot-2, 190-pound rising-sophomore from Catawba Ridge (Fort Mill, S.C.) High School was up bright and early in Columbus on June 22. Before 8 a.m. he had completed an intense throwing workout with Ryan Day and Buckeyes quarterbacks coach Corey Dennis. Following that workout, Davis was all over Ohio State’s enormous campus, but never alone.
The coaching staff wanted to make sure he knew he was a priority. With talent that reminds many of Justin Fields, there’s a good reason for that.
Ohio State offered Davis after another workout that Tuesday afternoon.
What has Ohio State done to show Jadyn Davis that he’s already a top priority for the Buckeyes? What made Ryan Day unique? How did his first real attention on the recruiting trail measure up to his expectations about the process? Does he think about the Justin Fields comparisons?
The young quarterback, a potential 5-star talent in the Class of 2024, joined Birminology on Lettermen Row to talk about that stuff and much more.
ICYMI: Lettermen Live hosted by Roosters
Lettermen Row senior writer Austin Ward is joined by Lettermen Row Director of Recruiting Jeremy Birmingham, former Ohio State quarterback Justin Zwick and former Ohio State quarterback Gunnar Hoak to talk about what moves the Big Ten could make as the college football landscape shifts and more from the world of Buckeyes athletics, especially conference realignment.
That’s not all the crew talked about, though. Justin and Gunnar broke down upcoming starting quarterback job. C.J. Stroud, Kyle McCord and Jack Miller are each still contending spot and the quarterback position will be under the spotlight when Ohio State begins training camp on Aug 3. Stroud showed in the spring game that he has the arm strength and skills to lead the Buckeyes when they open the season on Sept. 2 at Minnesota.
What is an August quarterback competition like? How long will Ryan Day hold off on announcing his starting quarterback?
All that and more on this loaded episode hosted by Roosters on Olentangy River Road in Columbus.
