Trio of Buckeyes lose black stripe, can bolster defense

Ohio State could use some help on the defensive side of the ball.

Three Buckeyes newcomers seem poised to provide some assistance. Freshman safety Andre Turrentine, freshman defensive tackle Tyleik Williams and transfer linebacker Palaie Gaoteote all three lost their black stripes this week.

The removal of the black stripe, which means they are officially members of the football program, is a big step for all three defenders. Gaoteote may be the most crucial of the three.

A former five-star prospect, Gaoteote was a star for USC before transferring to Ohio State. He was ruled eligible on Friday and played sparingly against Oregon.

But all three have a chance to contribute for a struggling defense. They might even prove to be the difference and help the defense turn around.

Zach Boren breaks down Buckeyes defensive struggles

There is no sugar-coating it for Ohio State, and Ryan Day didn’t even try.

Different issues, same outcome.

There are clear, undeniable issues for the fabled Silver Bullets. And Ohio State simply can’t afford to ignore them if it’s going to defend the Big Ten title and get back to the College Football Playoff after already getting collared with a loss.

How did Oregon exploit the Ohio State defensive setup so easily? Where do the Buckeyes need to make the biggest adjustments? Can the Silver Bullets bounce back in time for the toughest games on the schedule? Former Ohio State captain Zach Boren was back in the Lettermen Row film lab with senior writer Austin Ward to answer those questions and more in the latest episode of BuckIQ.
