Ohio State football recruiting can be a wild ride full of twists and turns as recruits from all over the country maneuver their way to signing day. Lettermen Row is here to help navigate the tumultuous roads by getting to the heart of the matter with the young football players and Ohio State coaches and staff members themselves. Today, Iowa standout Xavier Nwankpa reflects on his recruitment so far and his interest in the Buckeyes.
More than ever, recruiting is about relationships.
As high school football players from around the country try and navigate the world of college football recruiting without the opportunity to make college visits, the onus is on coaches and players to connect in different ways. Ohio State coaches are forced to grow relationships through FaceTime and Zoom calls and the Buckeyes are also relying heavily on the work being done by their current commitments, letting C.J. Hicks, Dasan McCullough, Bennett Christian, Quinn Ewers and others take the lead when it comes to relationship building.
So one good way to know who is a real target for the Buckeyes is to know what players the Ohio State players are talking to. Southeast Polk (Altoona, Ia.) High School safety Xavier Nwankpa (pronounced wan-pa) is one of those guys.
The country’s No. 2-ranked safety prospect according to 247Sports.com, Nwankpa has quickly become a name to know in the Class of 2022 for Ohio State, Clemson, Texas, Notre Dame and others. He was offered by the Buckeyes in September and is a priority target for Ryan Day, Kerry Coombs, Matt Barnes and the Buckeyes commitment group.
Why? What has put Nwankpa into the national spotlight? Where are his best relationships in recruiting? How hard it is to think about his future with so many questions unable to be answered? What school does he think produces the best graphics for him?
Get to know Xavier Nwankpa and ind out the answers to those questions and more in the latest episode of Birminology from Lettermen Row.
