Incredibly, no slowing down for OU freshman Kendall Wells
Conventional wisdom just said it wasn’t possible for OU softball freshman Kendall Wells. Sorry, doesn’t matter how good you are, nobody in the history of the game has been able to sustain that sort of start.
But, well, she is. Rolled right through non-conference play. Everybody was waiting for conference play to begin, but that hasn’t stopped her.
And Tuesday she made some more history.
Wells crushed a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth in 12-3 win against Wichita State. That gave her round-tripper No. 27, a single-season SEC record.
A record in 38 games, ha. OU now 35-3 overall and 8-1 in the SEC and returns to conference play for a three-game set vs. Kentucky at Love’s Field.

“I really don’t think about that stuff, that’s why I look so ridiculous,” head coach Patty Gasso said. “Don’t even know exactly what she did because I wish I could tell you that I know records and I know all of that. I don’t. I just want to win.

“There’s reasons why these guys are here. There’s reasons why Kendall got the ball. Somebody gave her back the ball to have in her possession. So for me, it’s just — I knew Kendall Wells was trained differently and I know her travel ball coach who is an amazing hitting coach. And he works and is good friends with JT, and they work very similar. So Kendall came in more ready than any hitter I’ve ever seen, and that is what we’re witnessing right now.”
For the season, Wells is hitting .383 with those 27 bombs and has driven in 60 runs. She has become the starting catcher, and Isabela Emerling has made sure she is not left behind.
Emerling is seeing a bunch of time at first base and this tandem has been next-level effective for OU here lately.
Hit after hit, bomb after bomb. That will work.
“It’s awesome because it’s just you see one hit after hard hit and like those were our goals for that last couple of innings,” Emerling said. “Like what are our three goals? What are we going to get done right here? And obviously when you see your team get fired up and hitting it’s like, OK, I’m about to do that too. And then the next person is going to do that too. So it’s great just passing the bat.”
