You might circle that one for OU basketball and head coach Porter Moser. It’s fun to schedule all these neutral site non-conference games. But eventually? Well, you have to win one for it to really matter.

Early on against Marquette, sure didn’t feel that way. However, OU fought back and showed what this team might be able to become.

OU rallied from down 13 points in the first half and 12 points in the second half to earn a 75-74 victory against Marquette in Chicago on Friday afternoon.

Derrion Reid came up with the big basket, a 3-pointer in the final minute. But honestly? A pure collection of guys coming up big at select moments.

A huge second half for Tae Davis. He had four points and four rebounds at halftime but finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds. That’s the type of aggression OU is going to need from him going forward. Davis had six offensive rebounds.

OU trailed 37-24 and then 37-33 at halftime. Marquette came out hot again to begin the second half and take a 50-38 lead before OU mounted its charge.

Between Davis and Nijel Pack, slowly crept back in. And in the clutch moments, OU was able to show, again, this is what is possible. This is why everybody is so excited about year No. 5 for Moser.

After losses to Gonzaga and Nebraska, OU needed a win when it stepped up in competition. It was Pack always having the answer. He scored 24 points, including making 5 of 7 from 3-point territory.

OU had a 72-64 lead when Marquette used an 8-0 run to tie it in the final minute. Reid came up huge with the three, and the OU defense carried the day on the final possession.

And breathe.

OU news/notes

*That’s a little more like it for Jeff Nwankwo. After hitting just two 3-pointers in the previous six games, he hit three Friday on his way to 11 points.

*Reid backed up a 16-point, eight-rebound performance with 15 points against the Golden Eagles. Moser has asked for him to be more aggressive. He was when it mattered most down the stretch.

Up next

This four-game stretch continues. OU (5-2) is at Wake Forest on Tuesday evening as part of the SEC/ACC Challenge. It is the second of four straight road or neutral site games against quality non-conference opposition.
