OU freshman softball pitcher explains her absence from Sooners

OU head coach Patty Gasso declined to go into detail last week about why one of her freshman softball pitchers left the team.
Gasso said it was more of a personal situation. However, that led to rampant speculation as to why freshman Sophia Bordi had gone back home.
“Well, she’s not here on campus,” Gasso told SoonerScoop. “She went back home. And that’s something that I don’t have the privilege to talk about. It’s more of a personal situation. So she did not finish the season out with us.”
Bordi was never expected to pitch for OU this season. The plan was simply for Bordi to reclassify and just soak in everything like a sponge.
Learn the ways and adjust to college life and everything like that. Give Bordi a leg up going into the 2026 season as redshirt freshman at OU.
Bordi speaks out
Bordi took to social media Tuesday afternoon, though, because of all the rumors that have been swirling in the last week.
“With all of the articles and rumors coming out, I thought I would address the situation myself,” said Bordi on social media. “First, I appreciate Coach Gasso for keeping my information private. I made the decision myself to step away from school and softball for the rest of the season because I needed to take time to work on my personal/mental health.

“This was something that I felt needed to be dealt with back home with my family’s support, and also so I wasn’t a distraction to the team in the middle of the season. I appreciated everyone’s concerns but wish that information wasn’t being falsely spread the way it was.
“With that being said, the season is still going and my girls are still working. I’m always watching and cheering them on no matter what. Boomer!”
