SoonerScoop podcast: Questions, answers from OU preseason camp
We’re in the thick of it now for OU football. Now just 22 days away from the season opener, the Sooners are getting to it now.
Six practices are in the books as head coach Brent Venables looks to get year No. 3 off to a great start. What have we seen? Heard? Where does OU go from here? Let’s go.
It’s time for the Unofficial 40 podcast from SoonerScoop to discuss all the latest happenings of OU camp as the first scrimmage is set for this weekend.
Losing Gibson a blow
Have to start with the knee injury to Jayden Gibson, reported by SoonerScoop’s George Stoia on Tuesday night. Although you feel confident about the OU depth there, losing Gibson is huge.
All you had heard from teammates and coaches was about Gibson’s maturity and how he was ready to become that guy in year No. 3 in Norman.
Where does OU go from here? Who wants to step up? Nobody is questioning Emmett Jones, but we’ll see how he navigates this situation.
Seen and heard at OU
We got our first practice viewing Monday morning. Hard to go too nuts with proclamations from a 20-minute session. But we do feel like we might have learned some things, maybe.
How strong is the running back room? Jovantae Barnes sounds different. Who are some of the true freshmen who will undoubtedly see the field for OU?
We’ve also heard from Venables and quarterback Jackson Arnold for the first time in August. Arnold continues to assert himself and understanding his role as face of the program.
Injury updates, watching guys continue to recover, seeing the summer conditioning gains. It has been an eventful initial six practices in Norman.
All that and all the banter you’ve come to expect from the Unofficial podcast by SoonerScoop.
