From the Wire: Ole Miss captain Sabina Machalova recognized on SEC Women’s Tennis Community Service Team

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Ole Miss senior captain Sabina Machalova was selected to the 2022 SEC Women’s Tennis Community Service Team, as released by the conference on Wednesday.

Machalova was voted to the team for the first time in her collegiate career. This years’ team consists of 13 individual players from across the Southeastern Conference.

Machalova has made a tremendous impact to the Oxford, Mississippi community and is an exemplary role-model on and off the court. The No. 1 Singles and Doubles team captain for the Rebels tennis team has contributed to the community through both the Ole Miss Athletics program and local organizations.

Through the athletics department Machalova has engaged in the Adopt-A-Basket program every year. Through this program Ole Miss donates Thanksgiving baskets every year to families in need throughout the Lafayette-Oxford-University Community (LOU). For Halloween she participated in the annual Trunk or Treat event for families in the LOU community.

Machalova has made an extraordinary effort to positively impact the education system in the community. She has volunteered at the Oxford Elementary Car Drop, welcoming students to school by opening doors and waving to them to start their day. By participating in the Feed The Sip program she helped collect non-perishable food items to donate to elementary schools in Tunica and Quitman County. By taking part in the College Football Playoff Extra Yard for Teachers, Machalova celebrated teachers in the LOU community. She also collected books and bears to donate in the annual Books and Bears collection.

Machalova engaged in a Hope to Dream in which she helped surprise 50 children in the Mississippi area with an entire bed set provided by Ashley Homestore. She also took part in the Night To Shine by celebrating guests with special needs during an unforgettable prom night.

Machalova is a member of the Rebels International Committee. She currently ranks top-50 in the ITA Singles Rankings.

Ole Miss men’s golf wraps up the Mossy Oak Collegiate in sixth place

WEST POINT, Miss. – In its final day of regular season competition, the Ole Miss men’s golf team wrapped up play shooting 863 (-1) at the Mossy Oak Collegiate to place sixth overall. On the individual leaderboard, Kye Meeks paced the Rebels with a career best finish tied for 12th.

As a squad, Ole Miss led the field with a total of 171 pars on the week en route to its sixth-place finish.

Capitalizing off a strong day one of competition, Meeks fired off a team-high five birdies in the third round to shoot 71 (-1) to jump up one spot to claim the career best finish. Meeks led the field, shooting a tournament best 2-under on par 3s.

Evan Brown followed up Meeks, firing off a round of 70 (-2) to finish tied for 20th, for his fourth Top-20 finish of the season. The Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, transfer tallied 38 total pars for the second most of the tournament.

Reigning Co-SEC Golfer of the Week, Jackson Suber logged a round of 73 (+1) to finish off his tournament tied for 23rd with a score of 216 (E) on the week.

Rounding off the Rebels were Sarut Vongchaisit and Brett Schell, tied for 46th and 74th place. In the final round, Vongchaisit tallied a score of 76 (+4), while Schell concluded with his best round in West Point at 74 (+2).

The Vanderbilt Commodores claimed the team title at the Mossy Oak Golf Course, shooting 839 (-25) as a team, while its own Gordon Sargent claimed the individual title at 204 (-12).

The Rebels enjoy a week off of competition in preparation for this year’s SEC Championship April 20-24 in St. Simons Island, Georgia, at the Sea Island Golf Club. Competition begins next Wednesday, with tee times to be announced.
