Ole Miss football opened fall camp practices on Tuesday.

The Rebels, who’ve won 21 combined games the last two seasons, are replacing a lot on both sides of the ball. However, now-sixth-year head coach Lane Kiffin said expectations remain the same.

“I think we’ve created a standard here of expectations in what we’ve done,” Kiffin said. “I do take a lot of pride in that with our staff and our former players and what was done and our staff all coming back for this season. It’s very exciting because there’s so much player turnover nowadays. We lost a lot of great players number to the NFL. Three Top 12 finishes in the last four years and one the previous 51 years really gives me perspective about what our players and staff have been able to do here. That’s the standard we’ve created [and] expectations we have.

“Three winningest programs since COVID in the SEC, including the new programs, are Georgia, Alabama and Ole Miss. That’s our expectation and the standards of how we expect to play.”

The depth chart is all but written in sand outside of quarterback and few other spots.

The Rebels are riding with first-year starter Austin Simmons. Simmons is taking over for three-year record-setter Jaxson Dart, a first-round NFL Draft selection of the New York Giants.

Ole Miss on Tuesday was mixing and matching pretty much all over, including offensive line and secondary. The Rebels open against Georgia State on August 30.

“There’ll be a lot of competition in this camp, as always, regardless of what players have done before,” Kiffin said. “They heard that last night. That reflected in practice today to create a very competitive atmosphere. This team needs to really have a blue-collar mindset to outwork people and to grind people out in games, so we’ve been working on that, and it’s an exciting group of kids coming together.”
