Oregon hosted a huge group of visitors this past week, including several 2023 blue chips. And this weekend, the last one before the early signing period begins Dec. 21, could be even more star-studded.

While the fans’ focus is largely on the 5-stars, there’s no way of knowing whether in the end, a lower-rated prospect might be more impactful. Take the case of one recent visitor: 3-star defensive back commit Collin Gill.

Gill just completed his senior season at St. John’s High in Washington (D.C.), which is farther from Eugene than all but one other school attended by a 2023 recruit. And despite being the lowest-rated prospect in the class, the staff believes Gill is a hidden gem who adds a lot of versatility to the defensive back group with his ability to play safety or nickel.

The On3 Consensus lists Gill as the nation’s No. 116 cornerback and its No. 1220 overall prospect. The No. 6 player in the District of Columbia broke down his recent visit for ScoopDuck.

“The visit was great overall,” he said. “This was my second trip there, and I even wanted to suit up and play and the bowl game.”

This time around, Gill was able to delve into more than just the basics of what it means to be a Duck.

“I met all the coaches and had great conversations,” he said. “I was with some of the commits like Kodi (Decambra), Caleb (Presley), A’mauri (Washington).

Gill also got to interact with 5-star defensive lineman David Hicks.

“I was working on Hicks and telling him how we need him,” Gill said. (“He) could be a cornerstone of the team and be a building block for this future national championship.

“(We) need guys of his caliber and talent to go win one, especially at a position that wins titles.”

Gill’s mother accompanied him to Eugene.

“I had a great time with coach (Dan) Lanning,” he said. “He finally got to meet my mom and talk to her (about) how much value I had to the team.”

Gill’s favorite moment on the visit was a lighter one.

“Fun fact: I beat coach (Matt) Powledge in sack and toss,” he said. “But it was good talking to him, too.”

Although Oregon had its ups and downs, Gill was impressed with the way the 2022 season went for the Ducks.

“We had a great run this season,” he said. “Even though we didn’t make the CFP or the Pac-12 championship, it was a great season for coach Lanning (in his) first year as the head coach.”

Gill is convinced that these next two recruiting classes are critical to Oregon’s future.

“The 2023 recruiting will bring a national championship in the next two years,” he said. “I guarantee that.”

Whatever his recruiting rating, Gill comes to Oregon as a proven winner.

“My favorite memory from my season is winning the (Washington Catholic Athletic Conference) championship,” he said.
