The Oregon Ducks capped off the regular season with a 26-14 win over the rival Washington Huskies in Seattle. Now, their attention turns to the College Football Playoff, where they drew a No. 5 overall seed and a matchup with the No. 12 James Madison Dukes of the Sunbelt Conference.

December 20 will mark two firsts. It will be the first time that Oregon has hosted a home playoff game. It will also mark the first ever meeting between the Ducks and the Dukes.

Both teams are navigating coaching turnover, with Oregon coordinators Will Stein and Tosh Lupoi being hired as the new head coaches at Kentucky and Cal respectively, while James Madison’s Bob Chesney was hired to be UCLA’s next head coach.

This matchup presents a few challenges for Oregon. The Dukes have a vaunted rushing attack that’s averaging 245.8 yards per game and 5.6 yards per carry. The Ducks are also battling the calendar in a way, as the December 20 kickoff will mark just about three weeks since they played their last game.

Having extended time off has not always been a positive under Lanning, but the Ducks did come away with a big 18-16 win over Iowa at Kinnick Stadium in November following their last bye week.

Oregon’s No. 5 seed marks the second straight year that the Ducks have made the College Football Playoff after earning the top overall seed a year ago in 2024.

ScoopDuck’s Max Torres and Justin Hopkins give their reaction to the CFP committees seeding and early thoughts on Oregon’s game against James Madisn.
