Abdul Carter makes AFCA first-team, is one step closer to becoming the latest Penn State consensus All-American
Penn State junior Abdul Carter is one more first-team honor away from becoming the Nittany Lions’ 45th consensus All-American after making the top team from the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) on Friday. He is also a Walter Camp first-team All-American. If he makes one of the remaining three teams recognized by the NCAA, he will cross the threshold needed, which is making half of the teams, to become the Lions’ first consensus pick since Olu Fashanu earned the honor a year ago.
Nittany Lions senior tight end Tyler Warren is a second-team AFCA All-American. Like the Walter Camp team, he did not earn the first-team nod over Bowling Green’s Harold Fannin Jr. despite winning the Mackey Award, which goes to the nation’s top tight end. He will now have to make all three of the remaining NCAA-recognized teams, which will come from The Associated Press, Sporting News, and the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) at a to-be-determined time, to earn consensus All-American honors.

In other news, Penn State center Nick Dawkins won the Wuerffel Trophy on Wednesday night. It goes to the nation’s top player for his work off the field and in community service.
The No. 6 Nittany Lions continue to be more than a touchdown favorite over No. 11 SMU ahead of next Saturday’s College Football Playoff first round showdown at Beaver Stadium. FanDuel continues to call the Nittany Lions an 8.5-point favorite. The betting total is 53.5 points for the game, which starts at Noon ET on TNT.
