Time for our weekly recruiting update presented by our friend Andy Luedecke at MyPerfectFranchise. Andy is a huge college sports fan and franchise veteran, having owned multiple franchises and businesses. Using his expertise, he helps others find their American Dream through a very thorough consultation and evaluation process.

Penn State put the finishing touches on a busy January Monday morning when four-star tackle in the Class of 2025, Jaelyne Matthews, committed to the program. The nearly 6-6 offensive tackle is the first player for Penn State in the next cycle and committed to the program despite a lengthy offer sheet from some of the best programs in the country. Today on the BWI Daily: Recruiting Show insiders Ryan Snyder and Sean Fitz discuss Matthews, the team’s retention of a critical assistant, and recap junior day.

Penn State ends January with another commitment

Snyder and Fitz start with the breaking news from Monday morning when Matthews committed to Penn State. Not only is he a high-value target for next cycle, but he’s in a recruiting region where Penn State is looking to reestablish a presence. Fitz and Snyder discuss that and which other recruits represent that possibility for the upcoming recruiting classes.

The football program also announced that former Penn State defensive end turned graduate assistant Deion Barnes will be sticking around with the program. That’s because Barnes has accepted an analyst role with the team now that his two years of assistantship are up. Fitz and Snyder discuss how important he’s been to the team for the last three seasons. Fitz mentions how much of a priority retaining Barnes was for the leadership.

Initial junior day feedback

Finally, Fitz and Snyder discuss what they know about Penn State’s final junior day, which took place last weekend. Snyder has spoken with several prospects who attended the event on Saturday and has a report about what he’s heard. Fitz also discusses what he’s heard from 2024 players and beyond. Lastly, they give one final update before the final national signing day on where the team stands with lone target Chimdy Onoh.
