Penn State tweets of the day
Initial picks are in for the Lions-Mustangs Round 1 contest. They all like Penn State to win by double digits.
“Penn State has the edge in overall talent and what is clearly the better defense, meaning this game will come down to whether SMU can protect Jennings and then win the turnover battle,” Paul Myerberg writes for USA Today. He predicts a 34-21 PSU triumph.
“Having more possessions will negate the Nittany Lions’ advantage and allow the Mustangs to draw them into an up-and-down, high-scoring affair.”

For ESPN, Adam Rittenberg calls for a 34-23 Penn State victory.
“Penn State impressed Saturday night in Indianapolis, even in defeat, as it outgained Oregon and attacked a talented Ducks defense with multiple players, not just do-it-all tight end Tyler Warren,” he writes. “Although Warren will find the end zone in this one, Penn State’s running back tandem of Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen will be the difference. A talented PSU secondary will do enough to contain SMU’s passing game.”
Frank Bodani of the York Daily Record predicts a 30-17 Nittany Lions win. And the computer system at Sports Line predicts a 36-24 victory for the home side.

Quote of the day
“I’m just excited to see the guys compete. Many people don’t understand that if it was a 12-man bracket for the last 10 years, we would be in it a lot. But I definitely think Penn State is capable of winning a natty. I can’t wait to see them play at home in the CFP bracket.”
