Penn State lost its lone quarterback commitment in Troy Huhn over a month ago. Now, the California native has publicly announced that he’s set to join former head coach James Franklin at Virginia Tech.

Listed at 6-foot-4, 220 pounds, Huhn originally committed to the Nittany Lions in June 2024 during a surge of 2026 quarterback commitments across the country. At the time, he was just the second player to join the class alongside running back Messiah Mickens.

Despite the fact that the San Marcos native lived on the other side of the country, he still visited Penn State eight times throughout his recruitment, the most recent of which was for the White Out game back in September.

Once Huhn reopened his recruitment, Minnesota and Stanford were reportedly two schools showing serious interest. However, the Mission Hills prospect also made it clear that he had a real interest in sticking with Franklin if Huhn had clarity on where he would coach next. That led to an official visit to Blacksburg two weeks ago.

Huhn is one of many current or former Penn State commits who went to Virginia Tech the past two weeks. Tight end Pierce Petersohn, running back Messiah Mickens, safety Matt Sieg, linebacker Mathieu Lamah and offensive linemen Marlen Bright, Ben Eziuka and Roseby Lubintus all visited with Franklin Nov. 22-23. That was followed by cornerback Amauri Polydor, linebacker Terry Wiggins and defensive ends Jackson Ford and Tyson Harley visiting Blacksburg this past weekend, Nov. 29-30.

Huhn is the fifth former PSU commit expected to sign with Virginia Tech, joining Mickens, Petersohn, Bright and Lubintus.

“I have always been a supporter of Coach Franklin and have always wanted to play for him,” Huhn told Rivals national analyst Steve Wiltfong following his visit.

A four-star prospect in the Industry Rankings, Huhn is ranked No. 361 nationally, No. 24 at quarterback and No. 31 overall in California. He finished his senior season completing 74.1 percent of his passes for 2,377 yards, 29 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also rushed for 253 yards and six scores.
