Penn State star tight end Tyler Warren is not a finalist for the 2024 Heisman Trophy. The list of contenders was announced Monday night after a week-long voting process concluded at 5 p.m. ET. The last Lion to attend the ceremony in New York for the award given to the nation’s best individual college football play was running back Larry Johnson in 2002.

Colorado receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter, Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty, Oregon quarterback Dillion Gabriel, and Miami quarterback Cam Ward are this year’s finalists. The winner will be announced during a live broadcast from ‘The Big Apple’ on ESPN Dec. 14 at 8 p.m. ET.

Warren did literally almost everything for the Lions in 2024 besides play defense and attempt a field goal or extra point. He is easily among the sport’s most impactful players so far this year. Ahead of the College Football Playoff, he owns 88 receptions for 1,062 yards. He caught six touchdowns and averaged 12.1 yards per reception. His 6.8 receptions per game ranks 12th nationally. The Penn State senior has rewritten both his school’s and the Big Ten’s record books this season. He has the most catches and yards by a tight end in a single season in conference history. He holds the Lions’ all-time mark for career career touchdowns and receiving yards by a tighe end. Warren also rushed for four scores and threw a touchdown toss in 2024.

So far this year, Warren has won the Big Ten’s tight end of the year honor and made the Senior Bowl All-American team. He is a shoo-in for the Mackey Award, which goes to the nation’s top tight end. He is also a finalist for the Paul Hornung award, which goes to the game’s most versatile player. Hunter, however, is expected to take that honor.

Assessing Penn State star Tyler Warren’s NFL Draft stock

Warren could have left for the NFL Draft last season. However, he opted to return for one final season at Penn State. It turned out to be a huge win for both the Lions and Warren’s NFL Draft stock. In his most recent 2025 draft big board, longtime ESPN analyst Mel Kiper Jr., ranks Warren No. 18.

“Warren is super versatile,” he writes. “He can be used as a traditional in-line tight end, at H-back, at fullback, out of the slot or lined up out wide. He’s a reliable pass catcher, and once the ball is in his hands, he can break free.”
