The dissolution of Penn State basketball and Micah Shrewsberry was complete Wednesday when the head coach seized the job opening at Notre Dame. In the aftermath, he addressed the team and the rest of the program detailing his departure to South Bend, Ind.

Now, he’s saying goodbye to the remainder of the Penn State community.

Less than two years after his hiring, Shrewsberry Tweeted a message to his followers thanking them. He thanked the players who developed under his leadership. And finally, he thanked the administrators at Penn State, both the ones who hired him and the ones he spent the past nine months working alongside.

Micah Shrewsberry’s message

“I want to start out by thanking the entire Penn State community. From the minute our family arrived in State College, you made this place feel like home.

“Thank you to all of the players that I was lucky to coach here. The 2022 team laid a great foundation that allowed the 2023 team to reach unprecedented heights. It’s hard to put into words what this team has meant to me. Their competitiveness, toughness, and teamwork all showed through in our toughest moments.

“To Sandy Barbour, thank you for this tremendous opportunity – and to Pat Kraft, President Bendapudi, and the rest of the Penn State administration, thank you for believing in us and this programs vision.

“To the fans who provided unrelenting support, we couldn’t have done any of this without you.”

Next steps

Penn State athletic director Pat Kraft is continuing the search for Shrewsberry’s replacement. In the aftermath of a Big Ten Tournament final appearance, and Round of 32 run in the NCAA Tournament, Kraft issued a statement Wednesday following the news of Shrewsberry’s departure indicating optimism toward that end.

He said: “We are already moving forward in a search for a new head coach and will identify and appoint a tremendous coach, teacher and person, who will take us to unprecedented heights.”
