Penn State football is off this week and will have its fate decided by the various championship games this coming weekend that will determine the College Football Playoff. To get fans ready, host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel discuss the most likely bowls and opponents that Penn State might face this year. While they’re virtually guaranteed a New Year’s Six appearance, which bowl is still up in the air? Subscribe to the BWI Daily Edition on YouTube, so you don’t miss the show!

Preview of Championship weekend

T-Frank and Pickel start by giving the outlook for the coming weekend. Does Penn State have a chance to move up in the rankings based on the teams above them winning and losing? Pickel lays out the opposite scenario for the Nittany Lions and explains why.

From there, they discuss the two bowls that Penn State can attend; the Rose Bowl and the Cotton Bowl. They start with the Rose Bowl and the several paths that could lead the Nittany Lions to Pasadena. Pickel explains which teams would need to win and which would need to lose for it to happen but also cites an out-clause that the committees could use to place the Nittany Lions in the game.

How does Penn State make the Rose Bowl?

From there, they look at the most likely opponents that Penn State could face. While a rematch with USC would draw the most buzz, there’s little chance that the Trojans would miss the playoff but still make the Rose Bowl. So that leaves Utah, who will play in the Pac-12 Championship game against USC this weekend, and Washington.

T-Frank gives a brief breakdown of what he’s seen from the Utes this season, and then he and Pickel discuss what a rematch with Michael Penix Jr. would look like if the Huskies make it.

Finally, they preview the Cotton Bowl. This season’s likely opponent is either UCF or Tulane. T-Frank has researched both teams and gives his overview of what a matchup with those teams would look like. He and Pickel also discuss the recruiting, opt-out, and publicity scenarios of both bowls.
