Penn State men’s basketball transfer forward Jevonnie Scott is no longer with the program, a program spokesperson confirmed Tuesday. The reason for his departure was not specified.

Scott, a 6-foot-7, 252-pound forward from Toronto, Ontario, transferred from South Plains College to Penn State ahead of the 2021-22 season. Using his sophomore eligibility due to the COVID bonus year, Scott would have two years remaining should he find a transfer destination.

Jevonnie Scott’s impact at Penn State

Brought into the program during a rush to fill scholarships ahead of Micah Shrewsberry’s first season with the program, Scott appeared sparingly with the Nittany Lions.

Struggling to be cleared to participate upon the start of the year, Scott eventually made his debut in January when Penn State topped Rutgers. The beginning of a stretch of appearances that would span 11 games between January and the season’s end in March, Scott logged a total of 70 minutes on the hardwood.

Season highs came in the form of 12 minutes played in a blowout loss at Iowa and against Minnesota at the BJC, with a season-high 4 points notched in a January loss at Ohio State.

On the boards, Scott provided some help to John Harrar with his size, grabbing three rebounds apiece against Iowa, Minnesota and Northwestern.

Next steps

Scott’s announced exit from the program comes on the heels of Mikey Henn’s decision to join Penn State through the transfer portal on Monday evening.

A 6-foot-8, 230-pound stretch forward coming from the University of Denver, Henn selected the Nittany Lions over interest from Illinois and Notre Dame. He also rounded out Penn State’s scholarship allotment ahead of the 2022-23 season.

With Henn expected to join the program in a few weeks, his addition to the influx of new players to the program makes eight. Two other transfers are set to arrive at Penn State this weekend in Bucknell’s Andrew Funk and Drexel’s Camren Wynter.

And, Shrewsberry’s first recruiting class at Penn State will arrive one week later on June 18. That will include five Class of 2022 additions in the form of Jameel Brown, Kebba Njie, Evan Mahaffey, Kanye Clary, and Demetrius Lilley.

“I can’t wait. I think it’s fun to get eight weeks,” he said. “You know who you have, but you don’t know who you have until you get a chance to work with them. So we’re gonna spend the first few weeks just really getting to know them.

“What do they do best? You watch these guys so much, but they’re not in the setting that you want them to be in. So we get to put them in different situations, see how they react, see what happens, put them on different teams, put them in different situations and see what we can do from there.

“But I’m a basketball junkie, so going a really long time without practicing, working out and doing stuff on the court, that’s hard for me. So I’m itching to get back out there and put all these guys together. I’m excited about our group.”
