Penn State’s Class of 2023 dropped a player Sunday night, as wide receiver Ejani Shakir announced via Twitter that he’s no longer committed to the Nittany Lions. A four-star prospect in the On3 Consensus, Shakir had been committed to PSU since May.

A native of New Jersey, Shakir has earned nearly 20 scholarship offers over the past few years. In addition to Penn State, he took previous visits to Rutgers and West Virginia. Boston College, Maryland, NC State, Ole Miss, Virginia and Virginia Tech were a few other schools in the mix.

“First, I would like to thank Penn State, Coach Franklin, Coach Stubbs, and staff for taking their time to recruit and host me and my family to an amazing university,” Shakir posted on Twitter.

“I want to thank the Penn State fans for all the love and support throughout my recruitment process. With that being said, I will be decommiting from Penn State University.”

This past season, Shakir totaled 42 receptions at Winslow Twp., gaining 409 yards and scoring two touchdowns in eight games. Winslow, who’s coached by former Penn State running back Bill Belton and quarterback Christian Hackeberg, went 5-4 on the season.

The Nittany Lions are now down to 19 players committed in the Class of 2023. Shakir’s decommitment also dropped them one spot in the On3 Consensus Team Rankings to No. 13 overall. USC has just a slightly higher average score of 91.322. PSU now sits at 91.279.

Penn State is now down to just one wide receiver in its class in Virginia native Carmelo Taylor. The Nittany Lions had already been hoping to add to the receiver room, recruiting multiple players at the position. The most recent prospect to visit was Miami native Edwin Joseph after he took an official visit to State College back in September.
