Penn State vs. Central Michigan recap

Host Thomas Frank Carr and senior editor Nate Baur sit down for a conversation about where Penn State stands one month into the season after a frustrating offensive performance against a MAC opponent. Penn State turned the ball over three times on defense and picked up a muffed punt but didn’t manage to pull away from Central Michigan until the fourth quarter. T-Frank and Bauer will discuss their impression of the game and what happened to keep Penn State from running away with the game.

But it wasn’t all bad. Bauer and T-Frank will discuss freshman Kaytron Allen’s performance, gaining 111 yards on only 13 carries and breaking seven tackles along the way. So despite teammate Nick Singleton’s struggles on Saturday, Penn State still found itself with the Big Ten Freshman of the Week in its backfield Monday. With that in mind they’ll discuss the state of the Penn State running back room one month into the season.

Defensively, the Nittany Lions stymied Central Michigan and, once again, batted away over ten passes. They’ll highlight Kalen King, Johnny Dixon and other players in the secondary for their impressive performance. They’ll discuss the standout players and progress that the Nittany Lions have made since week one. T-Frank will highlight freshman Dani Dennis-Sutton’s progression and why he thinks that the five-star defensive end deserves to see more playing time during meaningful game action.

Lastly, they’ll discuss the special teams situation and the duality of what’s going on with the third unit. They’ll highlight the punting prowess of Barney Amor and the field goal kicking concerns that Penn Sate faces this year.

Penn State’s disjointed offensive performance vs. Central Michigan explained: Film Study

Penn State got a 19-point victory over Central Michigan on Saturday in a off-putting win that left everyone, even head coach James Franklin searching for an answer after the game as to why the victory didn’t feel more satisfying,

“We had a good week of practice and preparation, but the game left you sitting there. Whether it was our focus, whether it was seeing, whether it was big play potential. When you look again at the statistics sheet, you feel good about it, but it did not necessarily always feel that way during the game,” Franklin said.

Since then, Franklin has watched the film and assessed what caused the issues for his team on Saturday. So we’ll do the same and look at what frustrated the Nittany Lions offensively. We’ll address Central Michigan’s shift to Cover 0, the issues protecting quarterback Sean Clifford, and the totality of how that affected the senior QB.
