What to take away from blowout win

Despite winning by a wide margin, Penn State played a rough first half, especially offensively. Bauer goes through the first quarter and a half discussing how the team started slow, including how the defense played, giving up yards early in the game. Finally, Bauer summarized the comments he heard from the players and Penn State head coach James Franklin postgame, saying that Rutgers is a tough football team.

However, the Nittany Lions are a better team, and the defense created several turnovers, including two fumble returns for touchdowns by Kobe King and Ji’Ayir Brown. Despite the dominant performance, Pickel warns about taking too much from this game, considering Rutger’s talent level.

Bauer and Pickel also discuss the injury situation for the Penn State offense, and Bauer crystalizes Franklin’s comments about receiver Parker Washington after the game.

Finally, they discuss the play of quarterback Drew Allar and how fans reacted to the freshman getting more contact this week than he has so far this season.

Penn State-Rutgers takeaways: Slow start leads to massive blowout and Lions’ ninth win

Piscataway, N.J. — Penn State beat Rutgers 55-10 on Saturday at SHI Stadium. It was hardly a conventional victory. But, it was a blowout. The Lions are now 9-2, and head coach James Franklin secured his 100th victory as a head coach.

Here are our takeaways.

1. It was an interesting day for the special teams

Nicholas Singleton returned a kick 100 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter to give the Lions a 7-3 lead at the time. It was the Lions’ first kick return score since 2020. And, it was easy: The star freshman had a gaping hole to gallop through in the middle of the field and ran away from the Scarlet Knights. Kicker Jake Pinegar was again good, too. He made all of his extra points and a 22-yard field goal in the third quarter. That was the good.

The bad was that Rutgers’ returner Aron Cruickshank averaged 42 yards a return and brought one back 66 yards that would have been a touchdown had Pinegar not tackled him. And, Penn State was lucky that Alex Bacchetta’s fumbled punt was negated by Rutgers being offsides, because the Scarlet Knights recovered the loose ball.
