Penn State freshmen dominate the conversation

As always, T-Frank starts by discussing what he learned in the 48 hours since the game’s final whistle. First, he’ll touch on the offense, how the game plan worked, and how the team responded. Next, he’ll highlight the freshmen that made an impact in the game, including running back Kaytron Allen, offensive tackle Drew Shelton, first-year guard JB Nelson, and quarterback Drew Allar.

Next, he’ll shift his focus to the defensive side of the ball. He takes on the challenge of discerning Indiana’s scheme and what it lacked, leading to the blowout. Next, he’ll give credit to the Penn State defenders and discusses which players made an impact during the game. He also breaks down what happened on the second drive of the game that led to Indiana’s only meaningful touchdowns.

As always, T-Frank will interact with the viewers live on the show. Lastly, he’ll briefly preview what he’s seen from Maryland so far on film.

Penn State suffocates Indiana offense: Film Study

Penn State throttled Indiana 45-14 in a game that wasn’t as close as the final score indicated. After a 75-yard touchdown drive on the game’s second series, Indiana gained eight total yards for the next two and half quarters. By that time, the Penn State offense had put up enough points to allow the backups to see the field for the final 20-plus minutes of the game.

Defensively, there aren’t many interesting concepts to discuss today, so first, we’ll set up how Penn State chose to attack Indiana, discuss some early issues that led to the initial touchdown, and then discuss how the team suffocated the Hoosiers after that.

Penn State must have enjoyed this game plan

The best defensive plans come from a distinct advantage in one area over an opponent. So in this situation, Penn State’s defensive line was far superior to Indiana’s offensive line. This meant that Penn State could deploy the fewest resources possible to the tackle box and focus its efforts elsewhere to stop the Hoosier’s lateral schemes in the flat. Defensive coordinator Manny Diaz was so confident in his team’s ability to control the run that he was able to play with two high safeties, allowing the underneath defenders to attack with confidence, knowing there was support deep. Even with light box resources, Penn State’s defense was absolutely suffocating against the run. The defensive line was dominant to the point of making the game laughable.
