Penn State news, notes, and updates for Sept. 19 include a look at the latest Lions’ point spread plus news about the Lions and NLWC wrestling programs dominating at freestyle Worlds.

It’s time to dive into Monday’s top tweets and headlines about the Nittany Lions and college football.

Penn State tweets of the day

We start with a look at Penn State-Central Michigan. The Nittany Lions and Chippewas meet for just the second time ever. PSU took the initial matchup back in 2005. This time, the home team is expected to win again.

According to Vegas Insider, Penn State is a 25.5-point favorite prior to kickoff. This space frankly thought the number would be at or over four touchdowns. But, oddsmakers must have some amount of respect for a CMU offense that is currently the best in the MAC. However, the Chips are 1-2 and finally got into the win column by shutting out Bucknell last week.

“We started the season 0-2 and this win gets a little of the salty taste out of our mouths,” defensive lineman Thomas Incoom told the school’s official website. “It’s the same guys doing the right stuff and it gives us confidence stepping into the next game. Everybody’s doing their job and I feel like everything’s clicking now.”

Kickoff is set for Noon on Big Ten Network.

In other news, former Nittany Lions who are now a part of the Nittany Lions Wrestling Club, which is one of many but arguably the most successful Olympic regional training center across the country, had a big weekend at freestyle wrestling Worlds in Belgrade, Serbia.

David Taylor (86 kilograms) and Zain Retherford (70 kilograms) were the two onetime Penn State wrestlers competing. Taylor won his second world title by beating rival Hassan Yazdani Charati of Iran 7-1 in the finals. Retherford, meanwhile, steamrolled his way to the gold medal match but finished with silver after losing an 10-0 match to Japan’s Taishi Narikuni.

From the NLWC, then, Kyle Snyder (97 kilograms) won gold, Thomas Gilman (57 kilograms) took second, and Bekzod Abdurakhmonov (74 kilograms), who competed for Uzbekistan, was fifth.

Quote of the day

“Abdul, as you guys know, in the little that you’ve seen him, he flashes,” James Franklin said after the game. “I know you guys have all seen it. We’ve been excited about him. He’s so mature, picking things up quickly, he’s fast, he’s aggressive.

“There’s something about that No. 11. I’m not sure, but it’s had a lot of success here at Penn State. And I’m glad for the lettermen that wore it before that he’s representing it the right way. But, if he didn’t have the game where he got sent to the sideline, you would’ve saw more of that. Hopefully we’ll continue to build on this with him.”
