Penn State news, notes, and updates for Nov. 16 include the latest College Football Playoff rankings plus a new preferred walk-on offer and more.

It’s time to dive into Wednesday’s top tweets and headlines about the Nittany Lions and college athletics.

Penn State tweets of the day

We start with the latest College Football Playoff rankings. Penn State moved up to No. 11 this week as it sits at 8-2. That is a three-spot bump up as it was No. 14 last week. It gives head coach James Franklin’s team a clear path to a New Year’s Six bowl with two games to go. A 10-win season would all but guarantee that the Lions end up in either the Rose, Cotton, or Orange Bowl. Analysts have a mixed view of where the team will end up at the moment, however. But, we’d expect all of them to come to an agreement on a NY6 slot before selection Sunday.

The Lions head to Rutgers this week for a 3:30 p.m. ET matchup on BTN. The Lions are a 19.5-point favorite over Greg Schiano’s side.

“Moving on to Rutgers, Coach Schiano, obviously there is history with Coach Schiano,” Penn State coach James Franklin said on Tuesday. “Got a ton of respect for him. Watch him on tape. Their team plays really hard. Got 16 years of coaching experience at the college and NFL levels, and obviously now at Rutgers, was at Tampa Bay, Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Was also at Rutgers from 2001 to ’11, and also had been on the staff here at Penn State.”

In other news, two new Penn State offers are out. One is to a preferred walk-on candidate. The Lions entered the race for Malvern Prep 2023 recruit Bobby Mears, who plays linebacker, receiver, and tight end in high school. PSU also became the latest school to pursue former Florida lineman Joshua Braun.

Quote of the day

“We saw a lot. When we first got there, we went into a meeting when we got to the facility. That was pretty cool. I got to see the coaches in action with their guys and it gave me a feeling for what it’s like to be there. After that, I was with Coach [Ja’Juan] Seider in his room going over film on how he would use me in the running game and the passing game. I also had a meeting with Coach [James] Franklin. We talked about a lot of different things.

“It was a really good visit. They have great personalities. I never saw any negativity in anything they were saying. Everything they said was just the truth. They’re a very honest staff. It was really cool seeing everything there.”
