Cornerback is one of Purdue’s most urgent needs. And, it took a step to shoring up the position by landing a commitment from the transfer portal from Stanford’s Salim Turner-Muhammad.

He has two years of eligibility as a graduate transfer, entering the portal on December 1, 2022. Turner-Muhammad won’t arrive on campus until after Purdue’s spring semester concludes. He is Purdue’s fifth portal addition since the end of the 2022 season, joining QB Hudson Card (Texas), S Anthony Brown (Arkansas), DE Isaiah Nichols (Arkansas) and G/C Jalen Grant (Bowling Green). Purdue is expected to be active in the portal when the second window opens May 1-15.

The 5-11, 190-pound Turner-Muhammad played in 11 games with one start in 2022, making 23 tackles, two pass deflections and a forced fumble. He played in only the last four games of 2021 and made one start. As a sophomore in 2020, he started five games and made 17 tackles with a PBU. Turner-Muhammad redshirted as a true freshman in 2019.

Turner-Muhammad played at Episcopal High (Va.) and was a three-star recruit in the Class of 2019 who had offers from the likes of Michigan, Georgia, Duke, Missouri and others.

Purdue saw cornerbacks Cory Trice and Reese Taylor depart after the 2022 season. The only proven cornerback returning is sixth-year senior Jamari Brown. Other options at corner are sophomores Brandon Calloway and Jah’von Grigsby along with redshirt freshman Jordan Buchanan and true freshman Zion Gunn, who arrived early. Junior Tee Denson could take a medical hardship as he struggles to comeback from double sports hernia surgery following his transfer from Kansas State prior to the 2022 season. He has yet to play a down.
