2022 Dallas (Tex.) Skyline defensive back Anthony Davis announced his commitment to SMU on National Signing Day, kicking off Wednesday by signing with the Mustangs.

Anthony Davis ranks as the No. 102 cornerback in the nation and No. 159 prospect in Texas, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average. For On3Sports, he ranks as the No. 74 cornerback and No. 129 prospect in Texas.

The 5-10, 177-pound prospect held offers from Colorado, Kansas, Louisville and others, but opted to stay home in Dallas to play for the Mustangs.

“It just felt like home, really for me because they just made it feel like you knew them,” Davis told On3Sports after his official visit. “That was my first time meeting them in person so it just felt normal, really. Just felt like the place to be.”

New SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee stood out with how he handled interacting with the recruits on campus. Cornerbacks coach Rickie Hunley Jr. was also critical in his visit in January.

“It just feels like he’s not like the other head coaches,” Davis said. “Some head coaches, they’re really not around, they just speak when they have to really. They don’t really have too many conversations with the recruits. He talked with the recruits like he’s a regular position coach.

“He explained how he was going to use me on defense and use me in anything. How he’s changing from being an OC to a head coach. All of that, really, just a great coach to be around, great energy.”

Where SMU’s 2022 recruiting class stands

Rhett Lashlee’s first class at SMU is a mix of high school and transfer additions. The Mustangs continue to mine the NCAA Transfer Portal for talent while prioritizing the Dallas area in recruiting.

In addition to Anthony Davis, SMU also reeled in eight early signees for the class of 2022 in Duncanville (Tex.) safety Pierre Goree, McKinney North (Tex.) defensive lineman Dylan Frazier, Washington (D.C.) St. John’s EDGE Isaiah Smith, Tatum (Tex.) EDGE Trey Fite, Lucas (Tex.) Lovejoy cornerback Jayden Lawton, Dallas (Tex.) South Oak Cliff quarterback Kevin Henry-Jennings, Arlington (Tex.) offensive lineman Jacob Waller, College Station (Tex.) A&M Consolidated offensive lineman Rhett Larson, Southlake Carroll (Tex.) tight end R.J. Maryland and Prattville (Ala.) kicker Collin Rogers.

On the transfer front, SMU also added Minnesota linebacker Jaqwondis Burns, Illinois State linebacker Shanon Reid, Michigan State tight end Kameron Allen, Virginia offensive lineman Joseph Bissinger, Texas wide receiver Joshua Moore and former North Carolina wide receiver Beau Corrales. Burns, Reid, Allen and Corrales all enrolled at SMU in January while Bissinger and Moore will arrive in the summer.
