Recap: SMU knocks off #22 Louisville, 34-27

SMU took on Louisville at 11 a.m. on ESPN in their first ever ACC road game. The Mustangs prevailed in a historic, 34-27 win over the Cardinals. Here’s how the game unfolded:

SMU drives down the field and Roderick Daniels Jr. punches in a 5-yard touchdown to put the Ponies on the board first. 7-0 SMU, with 11:39 to go in the 1st quarter.

Louisville answers back with a touchdown to tie the game. 7-7 with 9:00 to go in the 1st quarter.

Kevin Jennings goes down after running the ball inside the 5-yard line for SMU. Jennings is able to jog off the field. We will give injury updates when made available.

Despite Kevin Jennings going down injured during the drive, the Mustangs finish the drive with another touchdown! Preston Stone finds Key’Shawn Smith for a touchdown. Preston Stone comes in to the game and delivers to restore SMU’s 7-point lead. 14-7, SMU, with 6:24 to go in the 1st quarter.

Louisville puts together a nice drive, but it stalls and ends in a 46-yard field goal. SMU now leads 14-10 with 2:51 left in the 1st.

At the end of the 1st quarter: SMU holds a 14-10 lead and has the ball.

Elijah Roberts kills Louisville’s drive with a 12-yard sack. The SMU defense with a big stop to hold on to their 4-point lead. 14-10, with 9:15 to go in the 2nd quarter.

On a huge 3rd down, Kevin Jennings scrambles 59 yards for a touchdown! SMU holds their largest lead of the night, as the score is now 21-10. 6:46 to go in the 2nd quarter.

Louisville drives the ball, but Cam Robertson with a big sack to limit the damage again. The Cardinals settle for 3 and it’s a one-possession game again. SMU leads 21-13 with 2:23 to go in the 2nd quarter.

Colin Rogers sets a new career long to from 55 yards out as SMU now leads 24-13.

HALFTIME: Colin Rogers with a clutch kick right at the end of the half to put SMU up 11. The score is 24-13, SMU leads. The Cardinals will get the ball to start the 2nd half.

Louisville goes for it on the 1-yard line, and the aggressive decision pays off. Chaney scores to start the 2nd half. SMU leads 24-20 with 9:56 to go in the 3rd quarter.

Colin Rogers with another big field goal. Rogers connects from 43 yards out to push SMU’s lead back out to 7. 27-20 SMU with 7:19 left in the 3rd quarter.

Ja’Corey Brooks with an explosive play to tie the game. 27-27 with 5:40 left in the 3rd quarter.

End of 3rd quarter: SMU 27 – Louisville 27.

The SMU defense with a huge stop on 4th down to start the 4th quarter! SMU’s offense will take over at their 19-yard line. 14:08 left in the 4th quarter.

SMU with a massive drive to reclaim the lead. LJ Johnson’s first touch of the game is a touchdown! The Mustangs are back up 7, leading 34-27. 6:39 to go.

Isaiah Nwokobia with the first turnover of the game and no better time! The SMU defense holds strong again and gives the ball back to their offense. 2:23 left in regulation. 34-27 SMU.

SMU picks up a couple of first downs to secure the win! Kevin Jennings kneels down three times and the Mustangs pull of the upset. SMU wins 34-27 and moves to 5-1 on the season and 2-0 in ACC play.
