South Carolina linebacker Damani Staley and defensive back Carlins Platel are taking part in mini-camp this weekend with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

According to Teresa Varley of Steelers.com, Staley received an invite on a “tryout basis.” The son of Gamecock great Duce Staley, a former Steelers running back who is now the assistant head coach and running backs coach for the Detroit Lions, Damani is one of nine linebackers at Steelers mini-camp. Earlier this month, he received a mini-camp invite by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Staley saw his workload pick up after the week 3 season-ending injury to Sherrod Greene. He finished third on the team in tackles this past season and has a knack for being around the ball.

Platel, who is also there this weekend on a tryout basis, worked out recently with the Philadelphia Eagles at their mini-camp. He is one of seven defensive backs there this weekend and one of seven who are there for a tryout.

Despite playing just one season in FBS, Platel proved that making the jump from DII Assumption University wasn’t too much for him. His long frame, ability to play nickel, a position he started at for more than half the year, and experience on special teams only helps his chances to make a roster.
